As a herbalist, there are so many tools in our tool belt for symptoms of the elimination systems. I wanted to write about a few of my favourite plants that can offer a wide spectrum of support during the Skin Reboot Challenge. I've chosen to focus on herbs with an affinity for the digestive tract as I find thats what most often what presents in a clinical setting. So here are some of my go-to herbal allies for digestive support!
Not that I like to play favourites with the plants in my garden, but this beauty has a special place in my heart.
Name: Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis)
Uses: Constipation, diarrhea, IBS, stool softener, hemmorhoids, leaky gut syndrome, peptic ulcers, acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease
Best taken: capsules or cold infused tea
The beneficial part of this plant is based in its incredible demulcent activity - just image a soft cushy blanket for your digestive tract! The phytochemicals that provide these healing qualities are best infused in cold water not hot tea, so taking it in capsule form is a great option, just make sure to drink lots of water with them.
Recipe: Add 1tbsp Marshmallow root to a 1L mason jar, then add whatever other herbs and spices you like, I recommend a tbsp of ginger root and a touch of cinnamon. Pour boiling water over it and let sit in the fridge overnight. Strain in the morning, and drink throughout the day. The liquid will likely get a little thick, but that's the most medicinal part! Your digestive tract will love it!
Cautions: Take this medicine at least 1 hour away from any pharmaceuticals you may need to take, as it's thick, gelatinious quality may slow the absorption of these.
Name: Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale)
Uses: Slight laxative, bitter taste and acts as a liver support, helps gas/bloating and is rich in iron and a variety of other minerals. Dandelion is a strong detoxifyer, so this makes it useful for chronic skin conditions.
Best Taken: Tincture form, or tea of dried root
Recipe: The bitterness of dandelion makes it a great herbal substitue for coffee! Spice it up by frothing it in the blender with cinnamon and coconut oil! This plant is cold in nature so if you have a cold constituion, warming it by adding cinnamon or ginger will bring an overall balance to your medicinal drink.
Caution: Do not ingest if you have an allergy to the asteraceae/compositae plant family or have a bile duct obstruction, cholecystitis, intestinal obstruction.
Name: Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)
Uses: Liver protective and restorative! Useful in constipation, increasing digestive functionality, helping combat the effects of environmental pollutants, heavy metals, long-term pharmaceutical use, alcohol or unwanted toxins. A popular choice for gentle cleansing.
Best taken: Tincture or capsule
The medicinal aspect of this plant are it's seeds, and they are not entirely water soluable, so best to be taken in alcohol (tincture) or capsule.
Pro-tip: You can put Milk Thistle seeds into a pepper grinder, and grind over any and all of your meals for an added liver support.
Caution: Do not take if you have an allergy to the asteraceae/compositae plant family or are taking currenrly taking Metronidazole (an antibiotic).
